The Power of 1% Change: Small Steps, Big Impact in Art Therapy for Addictive Behaviors
When it comes to addressing addictive behaviors, the journey to recovery can feel overwhelming. The thought of completely transforming habits, thoughts, and emotions all at once is daunting. This is where the principle of 1% change comes in, a reminder that small, intentional steps forward can create profound, lasting shifts over time.
Hi, I’m Jessica.
In my work as an art therapist and addiction specialist (LCAS-A), I often see clients struggle with the pressure of “all or nothing.” They want immediate transformation, but change is rarely linear. By focusing on tiny, manageable shifts, individuals can build momentum and confidence, creating a sustainable path toward wellness.
1% Change in Practice
Art therapy provides the perfect space for these small yet powerful changes. Each session invites participants to engage with creativity in ways that bypass judgment, overthinking, or resistance, all common barriers in addiction recovery. Think of it like planting seeds in a garden. Each brushstroke, color choice, or shape explored is a seed. At first, the changes may seem invisible, but with consistent care, they sprout, take root, and eventually blossom into lasting transformation.
Even more importantly, building and nurturing our creative language gives us tools for when we are emotionally activated. When stress, cravings, or triggers arise, our frontal lobes can go offline, leaving the emotional brain in control. The emotional brain cannot put feelings into words; it thinks in images, sensations, and fragments. By practicing creative coping skills in a safe space, we develop a visual and tactile language that can translate those fragments into meaningful expression. Over time, these creative strategies become a toolbox for managing intense emotions and supporting lapse and relapse prevention in everyday life.
For example, a client might start with one minute of mindful doodling, noticing how their mind slows and body relaxes. Another might explore a single color or shape that represents a craving or emotion. Gradually, these exercises expand into layers of meaning, symbols of growth, or visual coping strategies.
These seemingly tiny acts are 1% changes, small, consistent, and achievable. Over time, they accumulate into a toolkit for resilience, insight, and self-regulation, all of which support recovery.
Why 1% Matters
Focusing on 1% change shifts the lens from perfection to progress. It honors the process rather than the outcome and allows individuals to celebrate small victories rather than feel defeated by setbacks. In addiction recovery, this approach helps clients build confidence in their ability to change, strengthen coping skills during high-risk moments, translate emotional experiences into visual and creative expression, and reduce overwhelm by focusing on small, achievable steps.
Conclusion
In both addiction recovery and life, the idea of 1% change is transformative. Each small step, one brushstroke, one reflection, one moment of creative expression, builds not only self-awareness but also a practical toolbox for navigating stress and cravings. In art therapy, these steps are like planting seeds in a garden of change, showing that recovery does not happen overnight, but it does happen, one creative, intentional step at a time.
